Is Peaceful Presence open to people of all backgrounds and faiths?
Yes. We are welcoming to people of all backgrounds and faiths. No religious or spiritual practice is required or assumed. Orthodox-friendly.
Do I need to bring anything if I'm coming for a yoga class?
We encourage all returning students to purchase their own yoga mat, but for beginners we are happy to lend you one of ours. Some people like to bring a closed bottle of water. Bringing a small or medium sized towel is also an option.
What do I wear to a yoga class?
Wear clothing that is easy to stretch in — shorts, sweat pants, a t-shirt, and perhaps a sweat shirt. Shoes or sneakers are put to the side and not used during the class.
Do I need to pre-register?
No. You can fill out our short health and release form and pay when you come in for your first class.
Do you sell gift certificates?
Yes, we do. You can purchase a gift card online or ask Andrew directly.
I've heard people get injured doing yoga. How do I avoid injury?

We should only move into poses with awareness and gentleness and in a way where we can stay in control of our movement the whole time. We are also in control of our ability to get out of a posture. We don't fall into a pose or bounce into it or fall out of it in an out of control way. We back off if we feel or sense any risk of injury or if we cross over the line from a bit of discomfort into pain.

Key safety principles:

  • When going into shoulder-stand, keep the weight on the shoulders, not the neck. Learn half-shoulderstand first.
  • A forward bend should be done while hinging from the hips, not with a round spine which puts pressure on the lower back.
  • Individuals with lower back problems must always be cautious in forward and back bends.
  • Never hyper-extend any joint.
How do you protect against inappropriate teacher behavior?
This is a meaningful and timely question. I do not wish to follow in the footsteps of teachers who have had their reputation and their life's work damaged by failing in this area. In my own life I have moved toward reliance on God along with Jewish practices, observances, and community because I found that I needed this support. There is nothing more difficult or more rewarding than self-mastery, and when one has it they have a positive and powerful effect on the world around them. Our professional conduct policies are clear, and we take them seriously.
How can I help the studio grow and reach more people?

There are many ways. After reading below, please talk to Andrew if you have questions.

We welcome positive reviews on Yelp and Amazon (for the book). Personal letters of reference or quotes that we can use to help us grow are also deeply appreciated.

You can also refer friends and family — word of mouth has always been our most powerful form of outreach.

Thank you for your support and participation. We are blessed to have a dedicated community.
